1. In what ways
does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products?
Use – I have used many traditional features in my magazine but I have also taken sections from different magazines and copied them then changed the colours and made them my own, for example I took the ‘UK Exclusive Interview’ from a previous magazine and made it my own buy changing the colours and fonts to make it fit t colour scheme of my double page spread. On my front cover I have used lots of techniques a music magazine would have for example I have put large text over the large image of an artist in the middle because I have seen many other magazines do this, also on my front cover I have used the big + which I made because I have seen it on music magazines, I have also used common features on my front cover like the data, a masthead, a barcode, magazine website, and some advertisement that is in the magazine. On my contents page many music magazines have an offer on the subscription of the magazine, also most magazine contents pages have the tittle of the magazine on it and the data it was issued. My double page spread has many features, like most magazine mine has a page number in the bottom right of the page with the magazine logo, Music magazines double page spread mostly have an interview/Q&A article my article is a Q&A to follow this trend in this article I have used columns which makes my article look well layed out and tidy.
Develop – I have taken a few different ideas from other music magazines and made the my own to make them fit the genres, the section on my contents page in the bottom right ‘The UK’s No1 Gig Guide starts on p57’ is an example of this, I took this from a issue of the Q magazine. I have developed the images on each page to make them stand out for example on the double page spread I put a white border round them to make the come out of the page and look less boring this also fills up the space in between the images to make it look better layed out.
Challenge – In my magazine I have put my own style on everything to make it my own and to fit the genre, I have taken different features and used various fonts and colours to change the way the look to fit my magazine to make it what it is.
2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My music magazine represents mostly 15 to 25 year olds as my magazine has different artists, bands and the latest music that my social group will like to listen to and read about, also the artist on my double page spread is also in the social group it may related to the readers. I have also used words like ‘wasted’ because it may represent the social group would understand and enjoy reading. The clothes that are worn in the magazine also represent the social group as it may be something they would wear as it is the latest trends, also the hair styles may represent the social group as many young people have that kind of style. The props used in my magazine may represent the social group as they could play the guitar. In my double page spread I have used simple and fancy fonts to make it easy but more enjoyable to read. Also my magazine has a gig guide which means it is aimed at the late teens to lower twenties age region because they are most likely to go to gigs like Glastonbury. I tried making my magazine like the NME or Q as they have roughly the same social groups as my magazine.
3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
The media institution I would like to distribute my magazine is Bauer Media because they have distributed many magazines like mine for example Q, Kerrang! And Mojo which have been around for around 20 years they also sell over 28million magazines a week, Bauer Media is the largest publishing group in the UK. Bauer Media also go into other media areas like radio and TV shows this could be a good future achievement if the magazine is successful.
4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
My audience for my magazine is from 15 – 25 year olds with a few older reader both males and females because my magazine is an all genre magazine like NME and Q, I wanted a music magazine that I would read and so I made this magazine because I don’t just like one genre of music a like all different kinds of genres.
5. How did you attract/address your audience?
I attracted my audience in many different ways like, the fonts I used video Pac which I really liked as I gave the text a bold stand out affect which is useful when reading. I also used colours that my audience would like for example red, my images look professional and well layed out to make them easy to look at. I tried maintaining a level of consistency in my work with the red, black and white colours and also the same fonts on each page because these colours go well together, my contents page look like a Q magazine contents page with that same colour and layout as Q magazine which is a well-established magazine I know my audience will enjoy reading my magazine as well, I also put a few posters that come free inside the issue on the contents page for advertisement. I made my article a interview/Q&A because I think they are interesting to read. In my article I have a general Q&A then underneath I have a ‘get to know Lewis more’ which allows the reader to have a bit more of an insight on his hobbies and interests, also as my audience are fairly young I have chosen artists that everyone will enjoy with lots of different genres like rap and pop for example the some of the artists I have chosen are Eminem, Rihanna, The Beatles and Jay – Z.
6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I have used many different technologies to throughout the process of complete my magazine, I have used different software’s on the apple mac like pages which I made my magazine on and Photoshop which I used to give me access to many different techniques like giving my images an affect and also to cut my images out and delete the background to put them into my magazine. I have used around 8 websites on the internet for researching and displaying ideas and also uploading my picture I took with a camera.
7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
In the preliminary task I used Powerpoint to make my magazine which is an terrible programme to create a magazine because it doesn’t look very professional, it’s not very well aligned, also I didn.t do much planning for it I rushed into to doing It, where as I did a lot more planning and researching different music magazines and how they look so I could imitate them in my music magazine, I had to create a rate card for my magazine so a lot more thought went into it the used of a better camera as well really helped because with a good camera you get a good image which is clear. I have learnt how to use different tool on Photoshop and Pages which has helped over the time I was making my music magazine, also getting to know how to use an Apple Mac was a challenge at the start of the course. I have learnt not to use a template like I did for the preliminary task.
